A unique Bartonella or “cat scratch fever” treatment is Clotrimazole. It is an antifungal medication used to treat various fungal infections such as athlete’s foot, ringworm, and other candidiasis infections. It is an imidazole and works by inhibiting fungal cells by altering the permeability of the fungal cell wall. It binds to phospholipids in the cell membrane and inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol. It likely slows fungal growth causing cell death.
Research by T. Li et al (2019) found that Clotrimazole had the capacity to completely eradicate stationary phase Bartonella henselae after 3-day drug exposure in subculture studies. Coupled with other Bartonella drugs, it offers another medication to help along the healing journey of eradicating Bartonella.
